Ethos

My aim is to create a simple and colourful line of comfortable clothing and accessories. It’s my belief that what we wear can dramatically affect the way we feel, so by making ethical, bold and considered apparel I hope to encourage people to curate themselves to feel confident and positive.

I’m strongly motivated to be mindful of the environment and take responsibility for sourcing materials and understanding what happens to them after use. As a result, I use t-shirts and tote bags that are 100% organic cotton which has been manufactured solely using renewable solar and wind energy. My packaging is also fully recyclable.

Supporting a local not-for-profit

Surface Gallery is an independent, volunteer run contemporary art gallery based in Nottingham, UK. They exist to support the professional development of early and mid-career artists and curators. I think Surface Gallery are an inspiration for me because they give opportunities to anyone to go and work there to develop skills and meet people.

I’m excited to be working with Surface Gallery by pledging to donate 5% of the money from each product I sell for three years. These funds go specifically towards enabling the gallery to do things that it wouldn’t otherwise be able to allocate money to, such as:

- Printing exhibition catalogues

- Paying for professionals to come in to deliver talks or workshops

- Purchase small equipment, like cameras

It’s my hope that through this partnership I can act as an example for other creatives and small businesses, to demonstrate the amazing potential in working together with others to achieve more for everyone.

Collaboration

I’m always on the look-out for like-minded creatives to collaborate with! I like nothing better than working with others to create something entirely new and unexpected (the more surprising and challenging the better). If you think you’d be interested in collaborating with me or would like to know more, then please don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected]

A bit about me, my background, where it all started

I’m Holly James, and I’m the one-woman-band behind Feral Sphere.

I studied Art Practice at Goldsmiths College, University of London and graduated in the summer of 2012. It was a very open course that allowed us to practically do anything; and so at the start of my final year I visited the textile department to see what I could do there. Immediately, I was intrigued by the complexity of the weaving looms, and set about learning as much as I could about weaving in a short space of time.

During this experience in weaving, I’d designed many repeating patterns and felt it would be a waste not to take them any further, and so Feral Sphere initially grew out of a desire to use those patterns. It has since developed into something that little resembles those early patterns, but I’m still heavily influenced by practices in craft and the handmade.
